An Evening of Beckett: Play, Not I, What Where

When: Thursdays-Sundays and Sundays. Continues through June 3 2012
Price: $12-$15
From the moment you enter the Heartland Studio and are greeted by curt, mildly insulting ushers who test your hearing, inspect your cell phone, and order you to your seat, you find yourself thrown into a cold, nasty, brutish world—just like one of Samuel Beckett's characters. The rough handling is apt preparation for the three short, jagged, little Beckett plays that follow. (Re)Discover Theatre's stagings of Play, Not I, and What Where confront the horror of life with a power and grace that do the master proud. Purists may object to some of Matthew Wills's directorial embellishments, such as having Not I performed by a woman wearing bondage paraphernalia. But these touches help to make Beckett's cruel, dark subtexts more visible. —Jack Helbig
