Re: “The color of his skin

Thank you for calling my comment ignorant, though I'm fairly sure you don't know what that word means. I didn't "get what I wanted out of this article"... I got nothing out of it. Reading it was an absolute waste of my time. Every day I hear people blame their problems on racism and I'm am so sick of listening to it. At some point people need to step up and take responsibility for their actions. Let's recap shall we?.. So, what I've read in this incredibly boring story (and I'm calling it a story because lots of the "facts" in here are made up.. like the entire last page... oh by the way, newmindset, you'd be surprised how often people publish things that aren't true, you're incredibly naive if you believe everything you read), he got a girl pregnant at 16, dropped out of school because he couldn't afford the kid and then somehow decided it was a good idea to have 2 more kids.. sounds like he's off to a good start, people with that kind of background usually wind up doing great things for their communities... wait, no they don't.. they usually pop out a few more kids and then wait for the government to step in and give them money for food and clothes and housing so they can raise their kids to follow in their footsteps and let this lovely cycle continue. If you cannot afford to have kids and are not mature enough to raise them, then you shouldn't be allowed to have them. If this "father" was more mature, he wouldn't be out in the middle of the night carrying around pipes and boards, looking to start a fight... He would be home with his family trying to figure out how to give his children a better life. If this fight would have been black on black or white on white we wouldn't be talking about it right now. But apparently to uneducated, ignorant people everything always comes back to racism. So by all means, please continue to blame white people for your problems, but in truth the color of your skin makes no difference... your life sucks because of the of the bad decisions you make.

Re: “The color of his skin

This is by far one of the most poorly written articles I have ever read. It rambled on for seven pages and then at the end tries to "sum up" and link a hospital worker to this murder??! Let's leave the detective work to the detectives please. I don't know how this was even published without facts being checked first. As far as I'm concerned, the guy who wrote this should be getting sued for trying to twist a story and slander a good person's name. I honestly don't even understand why this article was written... It seems like a man (who was probably angry about having to drop out of school and get a job to support his multiple children and their mother, whom he no longer wanted to be with) went out looking to fight someone and found just that. He immediately escalated things by bringing pipes and other weapons so it's really no surprise that someone ended up dead. From the pages upon pages written here it seems as though police did their jobs and interviewed a lot of people and made arrests. So why, 42 years later, are we reading some article (with all sorts of made up bits and pieces) about a troubled man looking to start a fight? Great job Steve Bogira... you wrote an extremely boring article and then tried to add in some interesting curve ball at the end by simply making stuff up. I guess that to be a writer for the Chicago Reader all you have to do is come up with a couple lies and then fill seven pages with irrelevant details..
