Amsterdam Real Book 18+ Free Recommended Soundboard

When: Sat., Nov. 29, 9:30 p.m. 2014
Price: free
Amsterdam Real Book is a wide-open collective created by the city’s rising generation of young jazz and improvised-music players—they hope to use it to build bridges with their esteemed elders, who put Amsterdam’s distinctive jazz scene on the map. Many of the city’s finest veteran musicians are still active, but the up-and-coming players in Amsterdam Real Book have opted to connect with them via material they’ve written—the youngters deliver freewheeling interpretations, sometimes drawing on noise rock or free jazz, of indelible themes by the likes of Misha Mengelberg, Willem Breuker, Michael Moore, Theo Loevendie, Leo Cuypers, and Tristan Honsinger. Regular participants include pianist Oscar Jan Hoogland of the impressive improvising group Ambush Party, drummer Onno Govaert of the trio Cactus Truck, and fire-breathing Cactus Truck saxophonist John Dikeman (an American living in the Netherlands); for this concert, part of a two-evening celebration of the 40th anniversary of Amsterdam venue Bimhuis, they’ll be supported by a fine lineup of Chicagoans that consists of cornetist Josh Berman, reedists Keefe Jackson and Mars Williams, cellist Tomeka Reid, and bassist Anton Hatwich. —Peter Margasak
