Amphitryon—Happiness From the Clouds

A genuine oddity from 1935 Germany—a musical-comedy version of a play by Plautus. Reinhold Schünzel made this film shortly before leaving for Hollywood, and the satirical irreverence toward Nazi pomp and spectacle and the entertaining raciness—which, paradoxically, he couldn't have gotten past the Hollywood censors of the period—may have speeded his departure. With Willy Fritsch and Käthe Gold. In German with subtitles. 99 min.
