Swan Lake

Gene Shiavone

When: April 14-18 2010
Price: $20-$125
Although Chicagoans may associate American Ballet Theatre with European classics, the company opens this engagement with an all-American, relatively contemporary program featuring Jerome Robbins's 1944 Fancy Free, Paul Taylor's 1991 Company B, set to music by the Andrews Sisters, and Twyla Tharp's 2000 The Brahms-Haydn Variations, a 30-dancer work receiving its Chicago premiere. The remaining seven shows are devoted to the balletomane's feathered friend, Swan Lake, in the 2000 version choreographed by ABT artistic director Kevin McKenzie after the 1895 classic by Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov. The first and last time ABT brought this sumptuous production to Chicago was in 2004, and some principal dancers from that engagement are back this time around--among them, physically and theatrically plastic Gillian Murphy, who dances Odette/Odile on Saturday afternoon, and Marcelo Gomes, known for his sensitive partnering, who plays the prince opposite Julie Kent on Friday (7:30 PM) and newly minted principal Veronika Part on Sunday (5:30 PM).
