Karen Yates's adaptation transplants Euripides's The Bacchae from ancient Thebes to present-day Orange County, California. It's not a bad setting for a tragedy concerned with order and chaos, inasmuch as many of the residents live comfortable, well-to-do lives while the region is always on the verge of burning up in a forest fire or falling into the sea. At first, Yates's tale of a rigid mayor clashing with a hedonistic cult leader seems poised to explore the ways in which our superficial sense of security relies on ignoring dark, elemental forces. But, as director, Yates struggles to find a tone. She and her cast lurch uncertainly from satire to long, earnest choral passages that impede the action more than they illuminate it. Presented as part of Rhinofest. —Zac Thompson
