2009
With any luck this biopic of Amelia Earhart will also vanish without a trace. Hilary Swank is sorely miscast as the legendary aviator, who disappeared during a flight over the Pacific in 1937, and stiff-necked performances from Richard Gere (as George Putnam, Earhart’s devoted husband and manager) and Ewan McGregor (as Gore Vidal's father, Gene, a civil aviation official for the Roosevelt administration who was supposedly Earhart’s lover) don't help. Adapted from biographies by Susan Butler and Mary S. Lovell, the script uses Earhart's doomed last flight as a narrative frame, but the main ingredients are the soggy love triangle and some half-hearted feminist uplift. Mira Nair (The Namesake) directed. PG, 111 min.
