Aluk Todolo, Lord Mantis, Murmur, Austaras

When: Thu., Sept. 20, 8 p.m. 2012
Price: $8
Wrapping my feeble mind around the new double album from French instrumental black-metal auteurs Aluk Todolo has proved to be both a formidable and a gainful task. The eight dizzyingly monumental tracks on Occult Rock (Ajna Offensive) total nearly an hour and a half, and their hypnotic swells and surges of atmospheric guitar and Krautrockish groove manage to sound monstrously menacing and tense even as they all but define "transcendental" (without the haughty attitude of, say, Liturgy). The furious opening cut, "Occult Rock 1," is an incredible ten-plus-minute crescendo of dissonant swooshes, prog-psych flourishes, and frenzied but oddly lulling blastbeats; much of the rest of the trio's cauldron-born ritual rock navigates haunting negative space with merciless exactitude, allowing nebulous guitar to flutter and creep through meticulously metered rhythms. Aluk Todolo don't make regular trips to the States—this is their first since '09, and they're only playing three U.S. dates—so don't skip this show figuring you'll get another chance soon. —Kevin Warwick Lord Mantis, Murmur, and Austaras open.
