Al's Deli | Evanston | French, American | Restaurant
French deli specializing in baguette sandwiches, homemade soups, and baked goods.

Our Review

Whenever I have the good fortune of being in the east Noyes Street neighborhood of Evanston around lunchtime, I make a point of stopping by Al's Deli for one of their ineffably delicious roast beef sandwiches. It's a matter of habit for me—I've been making that stop for nearly 40 years now because of simple animal attraction—but this venerable institution, more than 50 years old and counting, offers a lot more than deli standards. Think baguette sandwiches with spreads like bearnaise sauce and homemade blue cheese dressing, delectable soups, and chewy fresh-baked brownies and cookies. Al himself has been gone a while now, but his family maintains a classy, comfortable place where Northwestern students still look comfortable rubbing elbows with the ghosts of Norman Rockwell and Frank Capra.
