Morgan Freeman reprises his role as detective Alex Cross from Kiss the Girls (1997), this time trying to save a congressman's daughter from the clutches of a brilliant kidnapper (Michael Wincott) who seems more interested in toying with the authorities than in collecting his ransom. Assisting Freeman is the embarrassed Secret Service agent whose lack of vigilance facilitated the kidnapping (Monica Potter, doing her best Julia Roberts impersonation), while the rest of the cast is on hand to explain the plot to presumably dim-witted audience members or to set up Freeman's Solomonic pronouncements. I haven't read James Patterson's source novel, so I can't say whether he's responsible for the ludicrous plot twists, but screenwriter Marc Moss can take credit for the film's laughable dialogue. Directed by Lee Tamahori; with Dylan Baker, Penelope Ann Miller, and Michael Moriarty. 103 min.
