As part of its series YOsoLO, the Playground presents a pair of one-man shows: Seth Origitano's Sophomoric Oneness and Michael Gomez’s Hi, Mijo, It's Your Mom. The former, directed by Matt Barbera, feels like an uneven first draft, Origitano's high energy and physical comedy the only constant. His funniest bits circle back to a promiscuous STD-spreading senior named Donald, whose "memory is slipping but circulation seems to be on point." In Gomez's show, the comic deftly re-creates paranoid albeit well-meaning voice mails from his mother to deliver a cocktail of love, guilt, and irrational worry (with a side of arroz con pollo). As some scenes veer into the R-rated realm with beaver jokes and such, it's that much more impressive when Gomez closes, teary eyed, with a heartwarming message from mom, this one the real deal. —Marissa Oberlander
