Documentary
In this Kartemquin Films production, directors Dan Rybicky and Aaron Wickenden document their relationship with Peter Anton, a septuagenarian outsider artist from East Chicago, Indiana. The filmmakers become fascinated with Anton after discovering his paintings at a street fair, then spend the next few years trying to present his work in Chicago. As the exhibition comes together, Rybicky and Wickenden grow closer to the old man, assisting him with errands and eventually helping him move into a retirement facility; they also uncover secrets about Anton's past that make them question their support for him. Typical of Kartemquin documentaries, this strikes a balance between character study and social study, as the filmmakers ask us to consider how our communities care for isolated individuals who are elderly or mentally ill.
