All Things Fair

In his final feature (1995) Swedish director Bo Widerberg returns to the provincial prewar setting of his semiautobiographical Raven's End (1963). A high school student (played with wide-eyed passivity by Widerberg's son, Johan) begins an illicit affair with his teacher, a situation that's eventually tolerated by her husband, a traveling salesman. Widerberg treats the complicated emotions with the sort of unconvincing compassion Louis Malle bestowed on the incest in Murmur of the Heart (1971), but his meticulous attention to behavior and milieu (the schoolboys' games, the two households, the movie theater where the boy works) pays off in a heartfelt evocation of wartime Sweden.
