For his spring festival of one-acts, Stage 773 artistic director Brian Posen invited five theater companies to present one of the sketches in this collection of short comedies by David Ives. Posen acts as emcee, performing goofy bits and filling in the audience with factoids about each ensemble. But if the intent is to give us a taste of each company—well, the results do little to put any real signature on the pieces, and they’re mostly underwhelming. Written between 1987 and 1993, Ives's sketches, like one about monkeys trying to pound out Hamlet or another about Philip Glass buying a loaf of bread, mostly feel dated. One sketch, The Universal Language, makes out better in a staging from (Re)Discover Theatre that earns some genuine and unexpected laughs. —Dan Jakes
