Director and diving enthusiast James Cameron (Titanic, The Abyss) returns to the ocean floor for this large-format 3-D documentary in which a multiethnic crew of photogenic young scientists searches for aquatic creatures that thrive without sunlight. A seismologist examines hydrothermal vents—tall, chimneylike rock formations emitting inky mineral-charged plumes—while animal physiologists catalog the rare aquatic life-forms supported by these geysers. The marine experts, however, are outnumbered by astronomers and astrobiologists, who hope their study of underwater evolution will prepare NASA for an unmanned probe of Jupiter's moons. The science is compelling, though Cameron and codirector Steven Quale undermine the movie's scholarship with a silly sci-fi ending. G, 47 min.
