Scripted improv may be best suited for film and TV, with their generous allowances of multiple takes. Under the stage lights, it can become an excuse not to memorize lines. In this example from New Beast Theatre Works, a knife-wielding boy and his dim-witted friend team up for a cartoonish retelling of the boy's life story, stretching what could have been one hilarious sketch into 70 minutes of meandering and repetitive gonzo comedy. Family members die off and Alfred (Eddie Bennett) learns banal lessons, but neither he nor his knife cuts to any point worth making. As sidekick Mr. Lady, David Amaral does his best Larry-David-imitating-the-Muppets'-Swedish-Chef (pretty güd!)--and indeed, much of the humor here refers to other, funnier moments in comedy. --Keith Griffith
