Jewish filmmaker Yaron Shani and Palestinian filmmaker Scandar Copti collaborated on this gritty Israeli drama, which circles around chronologically in Pulp Fiction fashion to tell the interlocking stories of three families. Two Muslim brothers and their relatives in Jaffa are targeted for death by a Bedouin gang after their uncle shoots a gang member in self-defense. The elder brother's employer, an influential Christian, brokers a cease-fire, but at such a steep price that the brother turns to selling drugs; this brings him into conflict with a Jewish cop who's trying to locate his own brother, a soldier. Shani and Copti (who costars as a hipster druggie) elicit moving performances from their nonprofessional actors, who ground the somewhat breathless action in a streetwise realism. In Hebrew and Arabic with subtitles. 120 min.
