“A person that knows how to read and write can't sing flamenco because his pronunciation isn't right,” spits the illiterate flamenco singer Agujetas in this 1998 documentary. Originally a blacksmith by the name of Manuel de los Santos Pastor, he became a master of the beautifully guttural singing style practiced in his native Jerez, Spain. French filmmaker Dominique Abel mixes interviews with old and new performance footage, showing how the singer's fiery voice is matched by his pointed bravado and fiercely independent lifestyle. Agujetas's art is primal and intuitive, and Abel captures it in all its arrogance and tenderness. 58 min.
