Agalloch’s fifth full-length, The Serpent & the Sphere (Profound Lore), won’t disappoint fans who’ve grown to love the Oregon band’s maverick hybrid of shamanistic folk and atmospheric black metal. The album reassures you quickly that it’s not a decline from its predecessor, 2010’s Marrow of the Spirit, but it takes a bit more time to reveal its more profound rewards. Agalloch have always had that kind of confidence—they seem to know you’ll take the time to get to know their music, listening carefully enough to learn how all its pieces fit together. Those pieces cover a lot of territory: there’s the roaring blast of “The Astral Dialogue”; the loping, sweetly sinuous guitar lines of “Celestial Effigy”; and the delicate acoustic interludes that crisscross the album like quiet paths at evening, played by Nathanael Larochette of Musk Ox with a nimbleness that reminds me of Bert Jansch or Roy Harper. Bookended by ten-minute epics, The Serpent & the Sphere is structured as carefully as any of its songs; put its parts in a different order and you’d lose a lot. —Monica Kendrick
