Signal Ensemble Theatre's 90-minute one-act chronicles the last years of rock musician Brian Jones, the gifted, flamboyant, erratic founder of the Rolling Stones. Writer-director Ronan Marra's script bypasses Jones's early career--including how he was inspired by his love of Chicago blues--in order to focus on his affair with Italian fashionista Anita Pallenberg, his drug problems, and his turbulent relationships with bandmates Mick Jagger and Keith Richards, which led to his ouster from the group shortly before his mysterious 1969 death at age 27. Despite a sometimes moving performance by Aaron Snook as Jones, the play comes off as a trite showbiz soap opera padded with ham-handed, out-of-tune renditions of Stones songs. Ironically, the musical high point is an acoustic rendition of the Beatles' "Norwegian Wood" by Andrew Yearick (as George Harrison) on guitar and Snook on sitar. --Albert Williams
