After the Burial, Contortionist, Reflections, No Zodiac, Burn the Remains

When: Fri., Oct. 12, 6 p.m. 2012
Price: $13-$15
An Indiana progressive-metal five-piece with deathcore roots, the Contortionist picked an apt band name—on their second full-length, Intrinsic (eOne/Good Fight), they wrap themselves around breakneck hairpin turns and wiggle through spaces they shouldn't be able to. Their vicious eruptions of pounding fury seem to serve to highlight the more lyrical, clean-toned passages rather than vice versa, and there's a cool chrome-plated beauty to their tightly focused ambient moments. "Sequential Vision" and "Geocentric Confusion" are downright confounding in their calculated trippiness. Yes, the album has a science-fiction theme—never a shock with this kind of music—and on the band's Facebook page, front man Jonathan Carpenter recently invited fans to submit their own interpretations before he explains his ideas. I'm not sure the Contortionist have quite figured out where it all needs to lead—I can't shake a slight aftertaste of aimlessness—but everybody involved seems to be enjoying the journey so far. —Monica Kendrick After the Burial headlines; the Contortionist, Reflections, No Zodiac, and Burn the Remains open.
