A couple years ago Casiotone for the Painfully Alone main man Owen Ashworth decided to shed that name, and now he's calling himself Advance Base. The project's debut full-length, A Shut-In's Prayer (Orindal/Caldo Verde), came out in May, but it sounds like it was made for this time of year—with its pleasantly bulbous Rhodes piano sound, sparse percussion (are those sleigh bells?), and almost whispered vocals, A Shut-In's Prayer could just about pass for a glum, lo-fi Christmas album. It's a nondenominational affair, though, enacting only Ashworth's belief in drawing beauty out of misery and routine. "New Gospel," which describes an alcoholic's isolating behavior, ought to be depressing, but Ashworth's homely music is charming enough in its simplicity—and fits his weary, melancholy stories so well—that even the darkest songs are easy to enjoy. —Leor Galil Julie Byrne and J Fernandez open.
