Addiction Incorporated

If you've seen Michael Mann's The Insider (1999), you won't be surprised by much of this documentary about the civil action suit filed against the U.S. tobacco industry in the 1990s. The movie covers much the same ground, albeit far more prosaically, relating the material mostly through talking heads and vintage TV news reports (for the sake of variety, director Charles Evans Jr. throws in a few animated sequences and Errol Morris-style reenactments, though he doesn’t show much skill with either). The interviewees are good storytellers--particularly the eccentric research scientists who tested the effects of nicotine on rats in the early 80s--and the editing keeps their stories moving at a lively pace.
