Actress is the long-running project of London electronic-music producer Darren Cunningham, who also runs the Werkdiscs label. When he launched Actress nearly a decade ago he was basically aping the sound of vintage Detroit techno, but he’s come a long way since then. On last year’s beguiling R.I.P (Honest Jon’s), Cunningham deploys a slippery hybrid that blends murky, sometimes dirty ambience with the low-end throb of techno. “Shadow From Tartarus” features a dive-bombing, blown-out bass line battered by a numb, relentless four-on-the-floor kick drum while chimelike figures tinkle and float over the top. “Tree of Knowledge” is an abstract chill-out track, its surging, atmospheric synth pads punctured by knotted-up drum-machine rhythms and a panoply of skittering and scraping electronic sounds. Though rooted in dance music, Actress aims more for the brain than for the feet, and Cunningham hits his target dead on. This is the project’s Chicago debut. —Peter Margasak Parris Mitchell and Innerspace Halflife open.
