Acid Girls, Bearries, Figure, Andrew Michaels

When: Fri., Dec. 19, 9 p.m. 2008
Naming your group “Acid Girls” implies a pretty serious love for the acid-house movement, which was conceived in Chicago in the late 80s and then born, twitching and wide pupiled, out of the UK rave scene of the early 90s. This LA DJ-and-production duo, which has been lately splitting its time between home and Berlin, has absorbed acid house’s most important lesson: that riding the filter on a TB-303, morphing its output from muffled bass tones to squealing, brain-ripping mayhem, is an easy shortcut to nirvana. As remixers Acid Girls balance sympathy for the original song with the desire to remake the whole thing in their own image, turning Health’s squalling, pounding “Triceratops” into trippy, bleeping, blissed-out techno and Dizzee Rascal’s grime cut “Sirens” into a Baltimore-flavored rave banger.
