Eric Pfeffinger's 2003 play starts out as a keen-eyed study of two couples—one evangelical Christian and the other (deftly played by Niall McGinty and Laura Shatkus) liberal agnostic—who were once close but now find their beliefs dividing them. Then it throws us a curveball: the Rapture comes. All of the careful work of the first half—pitch-perfect dialogue, graceful character development—gets thrown out the window, leaving only the one-note comic question, wouldn't it be funny if the world really did end? Well, it isn't that funny. And Pfeffinger doesn't seem to be interested in fully exploring the implications—spiritual and otherwise—of his apocalypse. Instead, the characters talk (and talk and talk) about how they feel and what they might do if they ever get around to doing anything—which they don't. —Jack Helbig
