Maybe what impresses me most about Absolutely Not guitarist and front man Donnie Moore is his bizarre knack for sounding like a charming snot-nosed brat. On Absolutely Not’s 2012 EP Extendedmy introduction to the local trio—his transitions from glammy pop punk to dark, spastic postpunk don’t always exactly flow, but he displays an astute ear for candy-sweet guitar hooks while singing in the uppermost register of a vocal range that goes from “somewhat nasal” to “extremely nasal.” On the band’s newest album, Mister Something (Chain Smoking)—this is its release party—they seem to get what they sometimes obviously missed on Extended. Absolutely Not are at their best when they hammer through blown-out garage songs that last less than two minutes and let Moore’s charisma take charge, and that’s apparently the plan on Mister Something. Once you get past the extended intro of the opener, “Panic,” the album is loud, obnoxious (this is a good thing), and exceedingly zany. There’s no bass, so Moore’s sister Madison uses keyboards to give his dirty, trebly guitar some low end. She also backs him on vocals and throws in the occasional sci-fi or carnival synth line, while drummer Jenna Horwath beats the guts out of her kit (as any good drummer should). It’s Adderall music—imagine a much more out-of-control Les Savy Fav (the jagged “Creep Wrangler/Jeep Strangler” makes the similarities especially clear), with Tim Harrington about 100 pounds thinner and sneering nonstop. —Kevin Warwick Swimsuit Addition, Strychnine, and Che Arthur open.
