About Time

Upon reaching adulthood, a milquetoast daydreamer (Domhnall Gleeson) learns that he can travel through his own past and uses this power to seduce the perfect woman (Rachel McAdams), perform secret favors for his friends, and spend more time with his dear old dad (Bill Nighy, suggesting Jack Lemmon at his most cloying). This pat British romcom is like a whitewash of Nicholson Baker's controversial novel The Fermata, offering one wish-fulfillment scenario after another without stopping to consider the moral ramifications of its premise or its own ugly notions of hetero-male privilege. Writer-director Richard Curtis (Love Actually) papers over any disturbing subtext with wall-to-wall cuteness—even the sex jokes sound as if they were lifted from greeting cards.
