Re: “Mayor Rahm's bananas about the longer school day

This is just another perfect example of Teachers missing the point of being a Teacher in the first place: to teach! If you are a teacher because you really wanted to make a difference, then you get it. If you are a teacher because you failed out of engineering school from partying to much, and heard that tenure allows you to make too much money for what you are worth, regardless of how well you do your job, then you probably suck.

The fact is, one of the biggest problems with education in Chicago is not that the amount that the kids are learning. It's the fact that many of these kids are not getting the proper reinforcement at home, causing them to basically negate anything of substance they learned in the classroom, run the streets, and get tied into bad crowds. Voluntary after school programs did not do enough, so keeping these kids off the streets, or out of broken homes, gives them a better chance of succeeding.

Maybe the program can be considered on a "by-need" basis, and only implemented in areas where needed, and as long as they are needed. I remember back to when I was in grade school, and I don't think a teacher could keep any of our attention for an entire 7 hour day.

Or maybe you go to the communities and set-up programs that are funded by a pool of local businesses to allow the schools to offer a mandatory after school program that provides fun and useful educational programs, such as sports/health related, art, music, science, etc. I'm not sure if keeping the kids basically in "detention" is going to have the positive effect that the Mayor seems to be going for.

That's just my thoughts.
