Young rapper A$AP Rocky has been touted as all sorts of things by rap critics and fans. Because of his associations with fellow upstarts such as Danny Brown and Spaceghostpurrp, he's a symbol of a new generation of hip-hop artists who enjoy punkishly provoking older heads—he codirected a video for his breakthrough single, "Purple Swag," where a grill-bedecked white girl raps along to the lyrics, n-bombs and all. Because of his sprawling, Harlem-based A$AP crew and his indebtedness to NYC microphone gods like Cam'ron and Nas, he's a symbol of a nascent return to old-school rap-music values. Because he's a New Yorker rapping like a Houstonite, he's a symbol of the new borderless hip-hop world. Rocky is all these things, and probably more—but most important, he's a gifted writer and performer, and his ear for sounds that can alter the pop zeitgeist might yet rival Kanye's. Of all the rappers rumored to have earned seven-figure major-label advances recently on the strength of just a few tracks on the Internet, Rocky is one of the few who seem capable of making enough money for that up-front gamble to pay off. —Miles Raymer
