Four luminaries of the golden age of Mexican cinema—director Emilio “El Indio” Fernandez, cinematographer Gabriel Figueroa, and stars Maria Felix and Pedro Armendariz—teamed in 1946 for this gorgeous revolutionary update of The Taming of the Shrew. A landowner's headstrong daughter (Felix) chafes at the arrival of a general (Armendariz) and his juaristas. But soon she catches his eye, and their ensuing battle of wills runs tandem with an ongoing philosophical debate between the general and her parish priest. Fernandez artfully conveys Mexico's unique blend of socialist ideals and Catholic faith, and sends up his countrymen's machismo before ultimately capitulating to it. In Spanish with subtitles. 99 min.
