In the overcrowded church graveyard of a mean little Irish town, the dead are allowed to rest in peace for exactly seven years. Then Mick Dowd digs them up and disposes of their remains to make room for a new stiff. But when it comes time to disinter his own wife, Mick finds her grave already emptied. Much as Mick swaps one set of bones for another, playwright Martin McDonagh keeps changing his account of what happened to Mrs. Dowd, leaving us to wonder which version, if any, is true. The cavernous Irish American Heritage Center auditorium swallows up Robert Ayres's diffuse staging for Shapeshifters Theatre, and the cast's just-for-laughs approach robs the script of any menace. —Zac Thompson
