Drama
Set on rugged Corrie Island off the coast of Ireland, this 2009 heartstring-tugger, about an orphaned city boy (John Bell) adopted by a childless couple, is modestly engaging despite several improbable, cornball moments. The radiant mother (Connie Nielsen, who's particularly good) tries to make the timid boy feel welcome in his new home, though his small stature and pronounced stutter earn him disapproving glances from the taciturn husband (Aidan Quinn), who remains noncommittal about the adoption. The story is reminiscent of Disney family fare from the 60s, though director Vic Sarin (Left Behind) demonstrates enough restraint to keep it dramatically credible. PG, 103 min.
