A dead girl named Zoe leads us through her own funeral and burial in this three-act postmortem by British playwright James Saunders. As we follow Zoe's spirit and coffin from her father's home to church and thence to the graveyard, Saunders introduces her relatives (who are divided up pretty neatly between realists and romantics), reveals in flashbacks how Zoe ended up in this situation, and ponders the meaning of it all. First produced in 1964, the script is too talky and weighed down with whimsy to qualify as the forgotten masterpiece director Matthew Reeder seems to think it is. Still, Reeder's adroit, multilayered production for BackStage Theatre Company conveys compassion and complexity via sensitive performances and John Kelly's subtly shifting lighting design. —Zac Thompson
