Ill conceived or badly handled, this would-be meditation on faith begins when one of the brothers at a wine-producing California monastery has a vision of the angel Gabriel—a vision so vaguely depicted you might wonder why it's depicted at all. The ensuing controversy divides the monastic community, as stock characters take up the various ideological positions on a mysterious matter. What happens may or may not be a miracle, but it's certainly telegraphed by poor production values long before it's revealed as a plot twist. In supposedly candid conversations within the monastery walls, the monks and priests discuss their relationship to sexuality—an important theme—rather evasively, and all the coyness makes it impossible to suspend disbelief. Tim Disney directed and wrote the screenplay based on a short story by Rachel Ingalls. 90 min.
