In Shirley Lauro's 1991 drama, based on oral histories compiled by Keith Walker for a book about women in Vietnam, we meet nurses, USO entertainers, a Red Cross volunteer, and an intelligence specialist in the Women's Army Corps. The first act details their harrowing experiences during the war; in act two, we learn about the depression, alcoholism, and PTSD many struggled with after returning home. Despite being based on real people, the characters lack individuality, and Lauro's well-intentioned script is riddled with war-is-hell cliches and therapeutic bromides. Michael Buino's staging for A Reasonable Facsimile Theatre Company features a gung-ho cast, but only the last scene—a quiet vigil in front of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington—has any emotional impact. —Zac Thompson
