In this Shakespeare comedy it's typical for actors to solve the lovers' abruptly changing affections by shying away from intimacy altogether. But the cost is always high: the relationships seem put on. So it's a joy to see this enchanting production from Two Pence Theatre Co succeed at stirring up an atmosphere of tenderness and warmth just by taking comparatively small liberties. Here’s one: when Josh Mattingly’s impossibly lovable Lysander suggests to Hermia that “one pillow may serve them both” for the night in the woods, he sweetly sings his invitation. That's not the only way the show subverts expectations. Under a gorgeous, mythical-looking sycamore made from twisted white plastic tubing, canonical characters appear in unfamiliar attitudes: Oberon is arresting, caring, sensitive, deeply concerned for mankind; Puck is bitchy and insubordinate, an oddly bitter imp who irks us by humorlessly refusing to take pleasure in mischief. —Jena Cutie
