Truly It's not uncommon for children to manufacture fantasy from reality, but when the preadolescent heroine of this American-gothic vignette attempts to reverse the process, she finds real life often unwilling to accommodate romantic fancies. The dramatic arc of Drew Dir's play progresses too nebulously to make the most of its conclusion, but this Hypatia world premiere production, under the direction of K. Michael Renehan, is on the right track and needs only a bit of fine tuning (keeping the firefly effects and Erin McKeown's incidental music) to become the bittersweet coming-of-age parable it sets out to be.--Mary Shen Barnidge a Through 8/19: Fri-Sat 8 PM, Sun 2 and 7 PM, Profiles Theatre, 4147 N. Broadway, 312-714-0571, $20.
