A Little Night Music | Writers Theatre | Theater & Performance | Chicago Reader
This is a past event.
When: May 1-Aug. 12 2012
Price: $65-$75
Writers' Theatre has been dipping into musicals every so often over the past few years. Now the company has pulled out a gem with William Brown's staging of the deliciously wise 1973 portrait of middle-aged love written by Stephen Sondheim and Hugh Wheeler and based on Ingmar Bergman's Smiles of a Summer Night. Wry and earthy as aging actress Desiree Armfeldt, Shannon Cochran scrapes away the sentimental sediment found in so many versions of "Send in the Clowns;" and her playful sparring with Jonathan Weir as Desiree's choleric, nearly self-loathing former lover Frederik suggests that the pair can still surprise each other. Tiffany Scott's Countess Charlotte Malcolm lands bons mots like hand grenades, Brianna Borger nails "The Miller's Son"—so to speak—as Petra, and an instrumental quintet keeps the lush timbres of Sondheim's score in near-perfect balance. —Kerry Reid
