Based on Ingmar Bergman's film Smiles of a Summer Night, A Little Night Music is Stephen Sondheim's most operetta-esque musical: a comedy that can hold its own with the best of Strauss and Offenbach. Set in early-20th-century Sweden, this 1973 Broadway hit concerns middle-aged former lovers--a lawyer and an actress--who rekindle their youthful relationship, even though he's got a wife and she's having an affair with a married military officer. With a script by Hugh Wheeler, the show fuses wistful romanticism, jaded irony, elegant sophistication, and bawdy humor. Light Opera Works' solid production--staged by Rudy Hogenmiller and featuring a full orchestra under Roger L. Bingaman's baton--does justice to Sondheim's literate rhymes and alternately frothy and achingly lyrical melodies. --Albert Williams
