A Kid Like Jake | Greenhouse Theater Center | Theater & Performance | Chicago Reader
This is a past event.
When: Thursdays-Sundays. Continues through March 15 2015
Price: $20
New Yorkers Alex and Greg are trying to get their four-year-old, Jake, into one of Manhattan’s elite private grade schools. Judy, the preschool administrator helping them with their applications, thinks that Jake’s “gender-variant play” (he wants to be a princess) will help his chances at schools seeking to bolster their progressive bona fides—but Alex isn’t so sure she’s ready to embrace this particular side of her son. It seems like playwright Daniel Pearle is out to needle privileged, hypocritical liberals, yet he can’t quite muster the necessary vitriol or outrage. Still, Alex’s sustained panic attack yields some gripping moments, and, in Keira Fromm’s About Face Theatre staging, Katherine Keberlein tears into them, imbuing her scenes with a volatile mix of ferocity and hurt. —Zac Thompson
