A Game of Chance

Guru Dutt (Eternal Thirst, Paper Flowers) made his directing debut with this 1951 Indian feature, a sometimes awkward melange of musical, melodrama, and film noir. Dev Anand stars as a poor man who takes up gambling and crime to pay for the care of his tubercular sister, dividing his romantic energies between a gambler's moll and a respectable doctor. A huge hit in India, the film is interesting today for its inventive musical numbers and its view of crime, gambling, and capitalism as moral equivalents. In Hindi with subtitles. 137 min.
