Documentary
Inspired by Philip Shabecoff's book, this earnest documentary by Mark Kitchell (Berkeley in the Sixties) makes environmentalism look dull—hardly what we need as the earth heats up. Meryl Streep, Robert Redford, Ashley Judd, Isabel Allende, and Van Jones provide voice-over narration, yet Kitchell offers little that's newsworthy; topics like David Brower and the Sierra Club, whale and seal slaughter, and industrial pollution have already been covered in better films. By far the most galvanizing presence is Bob Bullard, championing the environmental rights of black Americans whose neighborhoods have become dumping grounds for toxic waste.
