All 23 performers belt, hoof, and emote their hearts out in this enthusiastic production of Michael Bennett's 1975 musical about dancers auditioning for a Broadway show. Shawn Quinlan's cast are easy to love and easy to forgive when the material is good, but even their best efforts seem tepid when it's ho-hum. Revelations that might've seemed shocking 35 years ago--some of the auditioners are gay! some smoke! they're tired and cynical!--are kind of a yawn today. The show's standouts remain its tender tributes to dance and showbiz, "At the Ballet" and "What I Did for Love." Hardcore fans of the megahit that ran for 15 years on Broadway should be able to get their fix here, but others may be only mildly amused. --Laura Molzahn
