A Borrowed Identity

A Borrowed Identity

Rated NR · 104 minutes · 2015

Adapted by Sayed Kashua from his own novel, this coming-of-age story centers on an Arab Israeli accepted into Jerusalem's top private high school in the late 1980s. Director Eran Riklis (Lemon Tree) balances an endearing nostalgia for the period—particularly its counterculture—with cutting observations of the minority experience. The hero finds that he must suppress his Arab identity to assimilate into the predominantly Jewish high school, but as he does so, he becomes a stranger to himself. Riklis handles the material sensitively and with keen attention to its political implications, only occasionally lapsing into obviousness. In subtitled Arabic and Hebrew.
