JOB OPENING: Print Managing Editor, Chicago Reader

The Chicago Reader is hiring a print managing editor to oversee all aspects of the Reader’s weekly print edition. This editor will work with the editor in chief and the digital managing editor to assign and edit stories for print and digital distribution on a daily basis, manage accompanying art and illustration assignments, and establish and maintain a deadline calendar in support of the weekly print production schedule. This person will manage section editors and help the editor in chief to identify areas for development as well as assist in reinvigorating features coverage.

Ideal candidates are omnivorous veteran print journalists with a passion for shaping raw text and image into accurate and enjoyable illustrated prose. Proven track record of covering the full range of Chicago’s cultural and political offerings is preferred; some experience with community-based news media is essential.

Further desired attributes:

  • Passion for Chicago news, politics, urban issues, arts, culture, history, and people
  • Familiarity with Society of Professional Journalists standards
  • Comfort managing all aspects of a print publishing endeavor, including with Indesign and other Adobe publishing software

Requirements:

  • At least three years editorial experience at a print newspaper or magazine
  • Proven ability to manage multiple priorities and maintain and meet deadlines under duress
  • Facility to manage and motivate staff toward excellence and thrive in a fast-paced environment
  • Knack for generating and shaping distinct story ideas and narrative approaches
  • Capacity to do top-quality work within a budget
  • Rigorous editing standards
  • Sterling news judgment
  • Familiarity with the Chicago Manual of Style

The Reader, founded in 1971, is among the largest alternative weekly newspapers remaining that came out of the 1960s and 1970s counterculture movements. The new owners will continue the strong tradition of cultural coverage and investigative reporting, focusing on both print and digital distribution channels.
