Re: “The city's other weed problem

David Lynch, we need an, "I am not a weed, I'm a legal milkweed," video.

Re: “This way for durian: Announcing the Key Ingredient Cook-Off

Durian followed by a jigger of Malort makes for a comedically divine digestif. Two assaults on the senses make everything right.

Re: “Shooting the breeze with Jeff Garlin

Good conversation with Jeff Garlin.

If Jeff Garlin put out a comedy album, the cover could be him standing in a big bowl with "of Right" under it. Big Bowl of Right about sums up his place as a Chicago comedian, living elsewhere, and always returning.

Seeing him at a small club like Zanies with a group of fans and friends is a good time in the best hanging-out-with-friends way. But his instinct to want to perform for people who may not even know who he is illustrates his understanding and dedication to his craft. A comedian engaging and winning over an audience must draw out the best that they have to offer.

Perhaps he downplays his star power as a protection of what he seems to value: the work of playing. With an idea, an audience, friends, his every day. Whether its seeing him work an idea that he brought with him, has long performed, or has just discovered and is pursuing in that moment, an infectious good time is had by all. It's his trademark. Genuinely earned.

Re: “Irony is a force that gives us meaning

I started to compose a comment, one that quickly overextended conventional comment length, then began to feel a gathering weight of unintended irony, considered trying to edit down and reconfigure comment ironically, then feared the scorn from those more finely attuned to irony. The shadow of a looming illusion of Zeitgeist fell upon me.

Opted to abort.

[Note to self: take week off to read OED definitions of irony, sarcasm, satire, parody, cynicism, skepticism, anthropomorphism, pratfall, lampoon, wit, drollery, burlesque...Note to self: take two weeks.]

Re: “Galled by the Reader's sale to the Sun-Times? Not really.

Peering through the glibness to find an applicable principle...

The only way to work is to quit (head beginning to hurt)?

The only way to stay independent is to say fuck it and embrace the purity of a collaborative blog (line between purity and impurity blurring)?

The only way to stay alternative within the environment of a daily, is to create a defiant, contrarian inner sanctum within the new office (vertigo setting in)?

Wait, define your terms, what exactly does "winning" and "not playing" mean?

Re: “Galled by the Reader's sale to the Sun-Times? Not really.

At the risk of shifting the tone of this comment string, I suggest the move to the Sun-Times building be made into a kind of low key (brow?) event. Initial thought: get some handcarts and have Reader, or perhaps Sun-Times, staffers roll employees "over the bridge, through the Loop, to our new pulpy digs we go." Those so inclined could wear paper mache heads, stop at Reader boxes and take out newspaper wrapped beer bottles, or merely pass out favorite Reader issues en route to their new home.

Re: “Ads From the Past: February 18, 1972

Pure Food & Drug Act, Soup, and War, along the Muddy Waters? That's a full week.
