Re: “Gene Siskel Film Center

The movies at Gene Siskel may not always be good, but they usually are - that's just a side effect of being a ballsy movie theater. They take risks, and when they work out, it's awesome. You'll see stuff here you won't see anywhere else (and student discount/beer at the concession stand = awesome).

I'm with Worley: classic Louisiana is clearly the superior sauce.

Re: “Alison Draper on Alison True

"She promised me that she wouldn't "blur" the line between editorial and advertising, but she would "push" it. The distinction was clearer to her than it was to me."

That's because it's clear as mud. These elaborate webs of metaphors--silos? new windows? what?--mean nothing.

I don't know what to say except that I'm sorry you guys are going through this. It must be hard to report on this as it unfolds in your own office, and I think your reporting is brave, as it was in the previous rounds of layoffs--though it's sad you have to don the role of a quasi-ombudsman again.

I remember how hard it is to put together Best of Chicago, what with all the reviews to be coordinated and networking with businesses and everything. Maybe I'm being cynical--perhaps justifiably so, given the circumstances--but it seems like the plan was "Hey, let's make Alison do all this super hard work getting the biggest issue of the year out, and then hilariously fire her for her efforts." Good tiiiimes.

Re: “I Lost It at the Movies

I hope "Tamela" is a reference to "Strangers with Candy." If so, best spambot evar.

Re: “Alison True Fired as Reader Editor

WHAT. I gasped out loud when I saw this. Alison was great to me when I was an intern and took the time to cultivate new writers, as well as manage an insane workload as more and more editors were laid off. I am so baffled. Sure, people whine about the Reader getting smaller/laying off fantastic writers, but she had to work within very difficult budgetary constraints. Seems like a bit of killing the messenger here. Alison, I hope you land on your feet okay. This is totally undeserved, from my outsiders' viewpoint.

Re: “Hyde Park & Kenwood Issue: Lit

although i'm mostly happier in my new home of edgewater, i reaaaaally miss hyde park bookstores. i never fully appreciated powell's and the coop until now. i still haven't found a suitable alternative on the northside, although myopic books is pretty decent.
