Re: “Chicago theater director Lisa Portes on dealing with actor freak-outs

I am an actor and I have often "freaked out" about props shortly before opening; because the props are so frequently not there, or we're expected to work with "rehearsal" props right through previews, or the props don't work. Too many directors seem to never give a thought to props. They forget we, the actors, actually have to work with them, handle them, make them function as part of the play. You have to cut a pie onstage and the knife is too small or too dull. You're afraid that the actor using the knife will hurt herself, or the pie won't get cut, so you go to The Chopping Block and purchase a $25 knife yourself (after repeatedly pointing out the problem to the director), because the director and prop person can't be bothered. You are supposed to strike a match on a tree stump in a period piece and the prop person reports that such matches do not exist, so you end up going yourself to the Jewel down the street from the theatre and buying a box of kitchen matches which of course have existed since long before the prop person was born. My point is that these "freak outs" are not always a matter of actor psychology. They're usually a matter of directors and prop designers not taking their jobs seriously, and not understanding and appreciating what it is that we actors do. So in fact it often IS "about the wig, or the chair." When I'm in a show where props are taken seriously and professionally, I'm in heaven- because that's the exception, not the rule. And then I don't "freak out."

Re: “A different direction for WBEZ

So Vocalo was a failure? Surprise, surprise! And Malatia's punishment for diverting vast amounts of donated money into that ridiculous idiocy is to be kept on to further eviscerate Chicago Public Radio. Remember that during the very week when they pulled th plug on all locally originated jazz programing, Jerome McDonald was apologizing on air in the afternoons for the noise of the builders remodelling the corporate offices. No wonder underwriters are pulling their support. I stopped giving them money years ago (I donate to WDCB abd WNUR instead). As long as failure is rewarded with further opportunities to fail, 'BEZ will continue to sink.

Re: “At Victory Gardens, a bitter uprooting

"Chad Deity" was a Sandy Shinner project, as were many other successful shows at VG over the last several years.

Re: “At Victory Gardens, a bitter uprooting

It should also be noted, in response to the mysterious "J," that "Chad Deity" was a Sandy Shinner project, as were many of the finest works of the last few years at VG. As for Yew's excuses: calling actors who had done several shows over several years to do a cattle-call general was insulting enough. Leaving these seasoned professionals to perform monologs for a panel of juvenile interns while they munched on their Potbelly subs was inexcusable no matter how "ill" he felt. Nobody's "poisoning the community against" Mr. Yew. He's done a thorough job of that all by himself.

Re: “Dennis Byrne misses the point on Republicans and abortion

Poor Byrne. He doesn't realize that people like himself have been drummed out of the Republican party. It's in the party's platform. It's what the party stands for. It is an important part of the reason for being of the party. If only 22% of self-described Republicans actually support it, then 78% of self-described Republicans should vote Democratic this year.
