Great selections. I was partial to Miele and Heli myself. And I'd consider the main attractions (12 Years a Slave, The Immigrant, and Nebraska in particular) to be some of the festival's very best. Sadly missed out on Stranger By the Lake though. Drats.

Re: “At Berkeley at CIFF: Some got lost, others left early

Great review. I looked at my phone one time during the feature, toward the end, during the astronomy or whatever the hell class that was went on. Otherwise I found the whole picture to be quite astonishing, developing a subdued rhythm and engrossing me as a result.

Re: “Weekly Top Five: The best of Robert Altman

I'm partial to California Split myself, though these selections are pretty much on the mark. I know most would likely include Nashville, but as you indicated, Short Cuts makes it look obsolete in comparison.

Re: “Weekly Top Five: The best of Brian De Palma

Nice to see Femme Fatale. Certainly one of the best films of its decade. And Blow Out is kind of a given number one. But I'd add Dressed to Kill and Carlito's Way up here as well.
